Alex Temple is Assistant Professor of Composition at Arizona State University, and a lover of both the world of Western classical composition and pop culture. As such, she prefers to look for points of connection between things that are not supposed to belong together, distorting and combining iconic sounds to create new meanings — often in service of surreal, cryptic or fantastical stories. She is particularly interested in reclaiming socially disapproved-of “cheesy” sounds, playing with the boundary between funny and frightening and investigating lost memories and secret histories.
Thick Line was originally written for Eclipse Wind Trio to play at the Fresh Ink Festival, but it can be performed by any number of wind or brass instruments. All the musicians read from the same score, which specifies rhythms, dynamics, contours and character markings, but not pitches. Each note thus blurs into a rich harmony, and those rich harmonies move up and down in parallel, as if the piece’s melodic line were drawn with a thick piece of charcoal rather than a fine-tipped pencil.
