about

Rei Coman’s Gaelic Call for solo tuba horn, was commissioned by the Lawrence Graduate Bayreuth Tuben Quintet in 2019. Its beautiful, haunting melody features the unique, expressive timbre of the tuba horn in all its colors, registers and dynamic range. With the composer’s permission, the ensemble decided to divide the Gaelic Call into two sections, leaving the piece halfway through and pausing for the listener to descend into the weight of Arvo Pärt’s five part Summa then returning to the solitary voice of the solo for the second half of Coman’s piece, as if calling back a memory of the original statement, now changed for having been away. The ensemble commissioned another piece by Rei Coman, a graphic score entitled, Sanctity in Shifting, which was premiered in 2020 by Ann Ellsworth. The LGBTQ+++ ordered the tracks of this album in a loose palindrome, using “Summa” as the fulcrum and the Gaelic as the first sonic realization that we are now moving forward into where we once were.
